Brands did not start with the birth of The Grocer in 1962. Brand marketing has been with us for at least 6,000 years. And quite a few popular brands today were established by the time we launched 150 years ago.
Yet happily, The Grocer’s first issue coincided, give or take, with the birth of branding as we know it, as increasing urbanisation, mass manufacturing , the expansion of the rail system, colour advertising, emerging media, and health and safety concerns combined to create ideal conditions in which brands could flourish.
